Dress Up Your ‘Do! How To Wear Hair Accessories
Accessorising is a top hair trend this year with the hottest designers adorning their catwalk models with everything from oversized bows and embellished headbands to girlie flowers and vintage lace accessories. Don’t be fooled into thinking that adding a little extra something to your ‘do is anything new though, women have been using hair accessories to complete their looks throughout history.
In Ancient Egypt, women would get the Cleopatra glamour puss look by incorporating gold ornaments into their styles, while Classical Greek women opted for a softer, natural look by adorning their hair with fresh flowers.
During the 18th century, elaborately styled hair was all the rage – think Keira Knightley in The Duchess. Big, volumised hair with structured curling was fixed in place using starch, then embellished with decoration for a real wow factor. These women lived by the rule that when it comes to hair bigger is always better!
Fun and flirty, no-one loved hair accessories more than the flapper girls of the 1920’s. Whether they were made of vintage lace, intricate beading or a proud display of feathers, headbands were the order of the day for these sexy and sophisticated ladies. Flappers girls always had their hair cut short, perfectly styled and frizz-free. They wouldn’t be caught dead without make-up and were renowned for going out and having a good time while remaining cool and classy at all times.
We like to think that the flapper girls were onto something there. With home hair colour available at such affordable prices, and a shade to suit every skin-tone, there is no reason why women today can’t have their hair looking its best all year round (we like to think we are cool and classy at all times too!). If you want to feel sexy and sophisticated then nothing boosts your confidence like freshly coloured hair (and makes you do those swishy head movements too!). When fabulous hair is teamed with the right hair accessory you can really make your colour ‘pop’.
Romantic, girlie accessories are popular this year and make the perfect flirty addition to an outfit. We love this simple but effective oversized flower from Topshop – perfect for prettifying your look!
If soft and girlie isn’t your thing, glam up your outfit with this gold box chain headband from French Connection. Team with gladiator sandals and you’re good to go!
Statement feathers are hot news at the moment and an elegant hair accessory is the best way to dip your toe into this trend. This beautiful headband from ASOS is delicate yet striking and will really make you stand out from the crowd.
Are you a hair accessory hoarder, constantly dressing up your ‘do with different clips, alice bands and bows, or do you prefer to let your cut and colour do the talking?
